Shop
hours are theoretically Monday, Wednesday and
Saturday from approximately 8:30am to 2pm, and
Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 8:30am to 1:30pm and 5:30pm to 8:30pm (6pm to
9pm in summer). However tourist related shops are often open all day and
evening during the summer months and are likely to be closed completely from
November to late March. Closed pharmacies will have a sign on their door
advising you of the ones that are open. Banks are open Monday to Thursday
8am to 2pm, and Friday 8am to 1:30pm.
Shops aimed at tourists are in the old town. Crete’s rich
tradition in hand woven fabrics, embroideries, wood carving and jewellery offers a real
temptation to the visitor. Examples, old and new, can be found all over Chania.
Stivanadika (Leather street) offers the opportunity to see traditional boots being made in
the old fashioned way. Art and craft shops and jewellers are plentiful in Zambeliou,
Kanevaro and Theotokopoulou streets.
The best choice of newspapers and magazines, both Greek and foreign, are to be found on
Yianari street, one vendor is right by the corner of Halidon street, the other towards the
indoor market. For bookshops with a range of foreign material, including maps and guides,
try one near the top of Halidon street, or another at the bottom of Halidon, in the square
by the harbour.
Quality fashion stores can be found all over the new town but particularly in
Potie, Tzanakaki, Papandreou and Skalidi. |
